Course Overview

Master the art of couture tailoring in this exclusive winter coat program. Over three weeks, you will create a custom-fitted, elegantly structured winter coat using refined couture techniques — from precision pattern work and professional tailoring methods to shaping, lining, and detailed hand-finishing.

By the end of the course, you will complete a timeless, impeccably constructed coat that reflects true couture craftsmanship.

Important:

Homework is required after several sessions to ensure steady progress and timely completion.

Course Objectives

• Teach students to prepare and refine patterns for proper coat fit
• Develop skills for sewing collars, facings, pockets, cuffs, and epaulettes
• Train students in correct interfacing methods for structure and durability
• Demonstrate how to attach lining neatly and professionally
• Introduce fitting diagnostics and methods for correcting common issues

Learning Outcomes (Skills Students Will Gain)

Students will learn how to:
• Take accurate measurements and adjust a basic coat pattern
• Cut fabric with the correct grain direction, nap, and seam allowances
• Construct different collar types (depending on model)
• Finish front edges using professional tailoring techniques
• Shape and set sleeves correctly, adjusting ease and shoulder position
• Sew welt and flap pockets and other coat pocket variations
• Apply both fusible and sew-in interfacings appropriately
• Attach lining using visible and concealed couture methods
• Perform fittings and adjust the garment for proper balance and structure

Prerequisites

• Confident use of a sewing machine and serger
• Ability to read basic patterns and make simple adjustments

Materials & Tools (Recommended)

• Coat fabric: 2.5–3.0 m — wool, wool blends, cashmere blends, or heavy drape fabrics
• Lining: 1.8–2.2 m — viscose, acetate, or quality polyester
• Interfacing: lightweight / medium fusible, tailoring canvas for collar and facings
• Shoulder pads, felt strips, bias tape
• Sewing notions: tailor’s chalk, pins, scissors, tape measure, seam ripper
• Sewing machine and serger (if available), hand-sewing needles

Session 1 — Measurements, Fit Analysis & Pattern Preparation

Body Measurements & Fit Review
• Taking accurate body measurements
• Understanding coat-specific proportions

Pattern Review & Corrections
• Adjusting and refining the base pattern
• Homework: finish correcting the pattern at home

Cutting & Marking
• Proper wool-cutting techniques
• Interfacing selection and application
• Marking pockets and key construction points

Session 2 — Collar & Front Construction

Interfacing Preparation
• Applying interfacing to all major coat components

Base Assembly
• Constructing primary coat panels
• First rough fitting and adjustments
• Homework: complete any unfinished panel assembly

Collar Theory & Construction
• Understanding collar structure
• Attaching collar to the coat body
• Finishing front edges: facings, understitching, topstitching

Session 3 — Pockets & Decorative Details

Pocket Construction
• Welt pockets
• Flap pockets

Decorative Elements
• Epaulettes, cuffs, and additional details
• Homework: finish pocket components (if required)

Session 4 — Sleeves & Shoulder Shaping

Sleeve Setting
• Preparing and shaping the sleeve cap
• Easing techniques

Fit Analysis
• Identifying drag lines and correcting issues
• Adjusting sleeve position

Shoulder Structure
• Installing shoulder pads
• Shaping the shoulder line for a tailored silhouette
• Homework: prepare sleeves or facings (as assigned)

Session 6 — Coat Assembly, Handwork & Lining

Body Assembly
• Joining front and back pieces
• Sewing side seams
• Fitting: length, shoulders, sleeve balance

Couture Handwork
• Adding refined hand-stitched details

Lining Application
• Attaching and securing lining for a clean interior
• Homework: complete lining preparation if needed

Session 7-8 — Final Construction & Presentation

Final Refinements
• Professional shaping and pressing
• Hand-finishing facings, pockets, and lining

Closures
• Buttonholes, buttons, snaps

Final Fitting & Presentation
• Perfecting the tailored finish
• Presentation of completed coats
